Testimonials, Advice, Venting, and Straight Talk about Early Childhood Studies

When I Think Of Research:

When I first began the course on research I was terrified. I had no idea how I was going to begin or what I was going to use as a topic. As I studied the material I realized that I didn’t have a clue about research. All I thought it consisted of was finding material and picking out the information that is valid to the topic. I was surprised to learn that there are so many components to research. Research is a delicate process that should be planned thoroughly. The results should be displayed truthful regardless if we agree with them.

There are a variety of research designs. A researcher should decide beforehand which design and method is the better fit for the subject that they have chosen. A researcher needs to be prepared before the research begins. Having a plan in place that displays a time frame for each method chosen for the research will help the transitioning from each part of the research. The respect for all participants is a must. They should have the ability to say when they are finished or if they want all the information received from them used in the research. A code of ethics should be in place before the research begins as well as consent from all parties involved in the research.

When I chose my subject I was challenged at what I wanted to research. The topic I used was broad and I was unsure on how to narrow it down. I had to think about my class and the concerns that I had. By listening to advice that was given to me by my professor and my colleagues I was able to pinpoint my target group and set a goal in what kind of information I wanted to gather.

I realize that trust and honesty not only lies with the professional and the child, but the whole family. Parents entrust us with their children everyday. As we interact with each other, they share information with us because they feel comfortable. We have to value their trust and ensure them that they can trust us with that information and that anything we share will be with their consent and truthful. That is the same ingredients when we do research.

I want to thank my colleagues for all the advice that you gave me through this journey. Your input helped me when I was feeling like I was at a stand still. I also want to thank Dr. Kien for all the feedback that she gave. The course turned out better than what I thought it would. I feel that I have the knowledge to begin a research project and the means to find the solutions if I get confused or lost. Good luck to my classmates and their future endeavors. I hope our paths cross again.
